A Game of Thrones: First Impressions and Commentary

Hey all, it's me again.

Unfortunately, recently I have been absolutely swamped, and that means hardly anytime to read or really write and update the blog. This doesn't mean I enjoy it any less, believe me I absolutely love sharing my thoughts, even if nobody listens or reads it. It is still fun to write out. :) Since I haven't updated in about two weeks, I thought I just write a little about what has been going on. This past week was spring break for us and my family and I went on a weekend trip and then were extremely busy that week. However about two weeks ago I started A Game of Thrones. Yes I know a little late to the band wagon, but what can I say. It took me longer than usual to read, mainly because I really have been busy with life so I didn't really have a ton of time to just relax and read a good book. I mostly got through it by sneaking it in whenever I could, even if it meant I needed to do a bit more work at home.

Anyhow, I did in fact finish the book and holy cow, it was so great. Totally worth all the hype, most definitely. I will admit, it was a bit slow at first until you really got to know the individual characters but once the plot got rolling, the novel was action-packed and hardly boring. My favorite part of the whole read was the individual character accounts. I feel that I really enjoy books that follow one individual character at a time because I like to see how the characters interact and perceive each other with in their own minds. I also love seeing how paths cross and how certain reactions create ripples in the story line. One thing that I'll have to provide warning on is that there are a lot of story lines with a bunch of different characters involved. The book that I had (which was very old from 1996) did have an appendix that gave rough outlines of all the characters and their family lines. This helped immensely and was very interesting because it gave the house symbols as well.

Overall my most favorite characters were Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen (yes I know she's everybody's favorite) mainly because both overcame so much to become such great independent leaders, especially Daenerys. Plus in the show she's really pretty and all princesses should be pretty (just kidding ;) ). The characters I hated the most were Joffery, who I thought was a little brat from the first time he appeared, and Viserys, because well he's Viserys and annoyingly persistent, as well as just irking in general. Something I hope to see in future books is Jon Snow's heritage. I had the suspicion that he wasn't Ned's child. Here's why. Ned is portrayed as pretty much the only outright good character, with morals, honor, and dignity. Now, I don't believe just from reading his noble personality that he would have a son after marriage to Catelyn that was not hers. It just doesn't fit him. The word on the streets that in the show the parents are hinted at and pretty much confirmed. You can look that up yourself, I don't want to be the spoil sport for those watching the show.

As far as plot twists, this book defies all odds. There are so many, that at times my heart hurt. Many people know going into this series to be prepared for a lot of character deaths and not to get too attached but I wasn't prepared for a large one that happened at some point through out the story. (Still recovering btws) All in all the book was a solid 4.5/5. I gave it a 4.5 because there were some parts that just were dumb moments that made the characters look stupid for not have seen it coming. One of these being between Petyr Baelish and Ned Stark. I'll definitely be reading the rest though make no doubt about that. I am so excited to see what happens!!
