Caelena, Dorian, Chaol and....Rowan??? Throne Of Glass Commentary :)

WARNING: A FEW SPOILERS AHEAD

With a heavy heart, I have finished all of Sarah J. Maas's books (that are currently out) in the "Throne of Glass" series. The books themselves were amazing with Queen of Shadows, which is the fourth book, being my favorite, though Heir of Fire has the most magnificent ending. I am honestly so sad the final book isn't out yet because current last book ends with such a cliff hanger it makes me want to pull out my hair. It felt like it took me so long to get through Empire of Storms, mainly just because of lack of time to read, but I eventually did and it was so gooooddd.

So first orders of business. What exactly did I find so likable about the series as a whole? I really loved the plot. I just thought the way it unfolded was so well-done and it really showed not only how the characters grew and matured over the 2 and half years the story line ran through, but it also showed how the author grew and matured as well. I'm sure that if that same 16 year old that wrote the first book were to look at the later ones in the series she would flip at where the story went. I really enjoyed how there were all these incredibly different story lines in the books as well. In the last book, finally all the characters paths cross and it was just really cool to see how all the puzzle pieces were beginning to fit together. Much like in the second book, where Maas drops a huge bombshell that alters the reader's view of Caelena, the last one does as well, finally explaining the mysterious ties of fate that Caelena has with Elena. Staying true to her style of dropping most of the action and enthralling secrets/surprises at the end, the last half of Empire of Storms sent me for a whirlwind.

One thing I found super interesting was the way Maas set up the books. Each book followed a relationship. Throne of Glass was Caelena and Dorian, Crown of Midnight was Chaol (ugh I still hate him haha) and her, Heir of Fire was just Caelena, Queen of Shadows was Rowan and Caelena, and then Empire of Storms was a mish mash of a romances across all the characters introduced. Dorian is one of my favorite characters and I have to say was redeemed in my eyes. He is no longer a wuss at the end of Empire of Storms and it makes me so happy. Chaol doesn't make an appearance in the last book, which even though I don't like the character very much, slightly disappointed me because well you know if you've read the books something not so great happened to him at the end of Queen of Shadows.

As a whole my least favorite story line was Manon's. At times it bored me just a bit but once she united with Aelin's gang I felt that it was much better. Another complaint would have to be how Maas waited until the last ten pages of Heir of Fire (which in my opinion was kind of a filler novel meant for setting up the rest of the story line and plot building) to totally twist everything around. It's not the ending I'm complaining about; it's the abruptness of it. I felt like the ending was a little delayed and implausible considering that the King of Adarlan most likely knew about the secret meetings, he is definitely not stupid after all you don't conquer a continent by being oblivious to things of that sort. It also made the characters seem kind of unintelligent for believing that they would be all fine and dandy working legitimately in front of the king without him knowing.  BUT the ending of Heir of Fire set up Queen of Shadows very very well.

Something else I found kind of implausible was the fact that Caelena never once gave any sort of hint in her behavior throughout Crown of Midnight or Throne of Glass that she was fae. That was hardly even talked about at all and I feel like she would have accidentally given some sort of inclination that she knew about her heritage when she spoke with Elena. It really didn't make much sense to me, but honestly that's just a minor complaint which is made up for by her BAness that is heavily prevalent throughout the rest of the story. Rowan was an odd character because he went from hating her to being super nice and caring for her within 10 pages. Their relationship is so similar to Feyre and Tamlin's relationship in ACOTAR (so extremely similar........) that it almost seems a bit transferred from Throne of Glass to ACOTAR. which isn't necessarily bad just making for a lot of smut later on in Empire of Storms.

Overall, I thought the books were fantastic, though I have to warn against a lot of sexual scenarios. sexual banter/dirty talk, and language towards the end of the series, especially Empire of Storms. So before reading just know that is in there. These books have definitely made my favorites book shelf and will continue to stay there for a long while. :)
