...I finished...ACOWAR Commentary--WARNING: Potential Spoilers

Hey all,

YES...I did it...I finally finished the A Court of Thorns and Roses trilogy...and I kinda want to die or crawl into a hole and just simmer for awhile because....the ending of ACOWAR (A Court of Wings and Ruin) kind of destroyed me just a little bit with its cuteness and happiness. So not gonna lie, it was difficult for me to really get into it at first because I kind of had a little bit of book hangover from ACOMAF (which I also did commentary on so go check it out). ACOMAF was just so, so, so, so good and it is now probably one of my absolute forever favorites, but I mean ACOWAR was good too. Definitely. Mainly because of the end. Epic.

So lets get started. First let's talk about Feyre's sisters, because really until the end of ACOMAF, they did not show up hardly at all and it made me sad because I actually really like Nesta, even though some find her cruel and cold, which I have to say really changes at the end of ACOWAR and we really get to see how she changes. She is beyond a doubt, an extraordinary example of a dynamic character (other than Rhys, which if any of you follow my Tumblr or read my other writing, know that I absolutely adore the way he transformed). On the other hand...Elain kinda got mixed feelings on my end. Still not sure if I'm into the whole Lucien's mate thing...it felt a little out of place, like Maas just threw it in there as wry humor and a surprise. Nothing really happens and that disappointed me, but because of this, I think I'm team Elzriel. Still not totally sure though. As a whole I think Feyre really sees herself in Elain, causing her to remember where she came from and how broken she was when she first became High Fae, which in turn allows her to truly be there for Elain which made me so happy and touched. As for Nessian...yes. That's all I'm going to say on that...Just yes.

Throughout the whole series, I think my most favorite character is....The Suriel. And his death literally killed me...whoops...that's a spoiler....Anyway...I almost cried no joke as hard as I did when Rhys tells Feyre his whole story. (And believe me during that I was literally balling like a little baby which I hardly ever do when it comes to books.) All the Suriel wanted was kindness and something about his violent end just broke me....but it was good plot. Still sad tho. Moving on...least favorite character...you know it...Tim Tams. I hate Tamlin. With a passion. I'm not actually sure why, I just think he is a terrible character that is kind of stagnant, doesn't really change ever. Kind of a simple reason. Rhysand is still bae, in case any one was wondering. He is just....everything I have ever fantasized about, though I'd never tell my boy friend that ;P. Just lovely.

Anyway. So it's pretty obvious that I think pretty highly of the book/series, but I didn't like all of it. I think I stated that reading both books was hard at first, but then I was practically drinking in the story at the end in gulps. Yeahhhhh....the beginnings were slow, though ACOWAR was slower more towards the middle and I breezed through about 150-200 pages pretty quickly. Then it was just a lot of talking and explaining, which was worth it for the epic battle scene at the end, but still took a while to get through. (SPOILERS AHEAD) I also didn't like Rhys dying and being brought back to life within 3 pages. Okay. Yes I know. Unpopular opinion. But it's the truth. I actually had this spoiled for me and it kinda killed the vibe because I knew he had to live through it because nobody posted about him being dead forever and I cheated once again, reading the last page. I probably would have rather him just stayed dead instead of everything being reversed in like a few pages. I probably would have killed him off at like 200 to go and then have him make a miraculous dramatic appearance and swoop in an save the day. Like Feyre's father...who unfortunately stays dead.

Let's just talk about that plot twist for a second. So we never see Feyre's father really aside from the bare mentioning in ACOTAR and the very, very, very end of ACOWAR where he is brutally murdered by Hybern, whose death I rooted for and whooped when Nesta chopped off his head. I didn't expect it at all actually, though I was suspicious because of all his time away. Yeah so all in all, the ending made the book. It was fantastic and action packed and made me sad when it was over. ACOMAF will still be my favorite, but this one was good too. I can't wait for the spin offs because there are a lot of unanswered questions, and something about a wall scene I keep hearing about, though I don't really know what that's all about, haha, just naive I guess.

Final Impression: I didn't love it as much as ACOMAF, but it still reigns higher than ACOTAR. I'd give it about a 4 out of 5 just because some parts I really loved, like Cassian and Nesta and Amren, and then because some parts I just really didn't like like Rhys' resurrection so soon after his supposed death...I just didn't like how she wrote that part but I am kinda glad he's alive because the last time I read something like this happened (Read the Young Elites by Marie Lu and you'll get it) my fave character didn't come back and I threw my book angrily at the wall and laid on my floor unmoving for like an hour groaning like Tina Belcher. So yeah, resurrection good, the way it panned out so-so. Overall pretty good finisher novel. I'm sad the books are done and really glad I read the rest.
