THE FEELS!!!!!--A Court of Mist and Fury Discussion (SPOILERS)
Hey all,
It's me again! Probably sooner than expected after my recent absence. BUT it's summer and that means more than enough time for me to read and do whatever! And boy I've been busy. I literally not even ten minutes ago finished A Court of Mist and Fury, another book by Sarah J Maas in the ACOTAR trilogy. Lemme just say not many sequels are better than the first novels but this book takes the cake by far. A Court of Thorns and Roses, which I also wrote on earlier when I first read it, didn't even come close to the feels that I had for this one. I had thought it was a pretty typical YA novel, which is the reason I was happy with simply taking the presumed happy ending that it presented. Boy was I so wrong in thinking that it was the end of changes between Tamlin and Feyre's relationship and honestly I'm relieved. I knew something felt a bit too good to be true and low 'n behold...I was right.
When I first started reading, I was like UGH great another whiny, cry baby heroine that has a lot of problems (which now that I think about it, is actually kinda realistic given Feyre's trials and such but whatever). I'll be honest I almost stopped reading to move on to something else, especially after some weird sex scene that to me just showed that all Tamlin and Feyre had as physical but not emotionally beneficial. BUT then the wedding...Okay...so I was never a fan of Rhysand at the beginning...actually I thought he was a jerk....OH HOW THE TABLES HAVE TURNED...alright, alright, sorry getting a little ahead of myself...this book was just...not at all what I expected...the plot twist to defy all plot twists. And I loved it. Now I am an avid Feysand supporter and absolutely hate Tamlin (which I actually find relief in because I hated him anyway and that was part of the reason I didn't want to read the sequel.
Back to the wedding scene that I mentioned before, it was the first appearance of Rhys and honestly that is when the book just got so much better. You could begin to see the shift from moping and self-pity to adventure and self confidence. So, if you like me, are beginning to read it and are like ew, no more, stop, making it to when she starts seeing him and you will be amazed. Rhysand is definitely, without a doubt, my absolute favorite character I have ever, in all my reading, encountered. He is heroic and selfless in all the right places, with just a dash of humbleness that I didn't expect. For me this book was a breath of fresh air. It was also HILARIOUS. I found myself laughing so hard at Cassian and Azriel and all the other hysterical banter, and I was so glad for the comic relief because ACOTAR had none. Even if a times my family looked at me like I was crazy for suddenly giggling. Thankfully that only happened like one time because I spent all of last night locked in my room, absorbed in the last half the book because if any of you has read this, you'll know its a nail biter and a stress inducer.
Before I get into my next discussion topic, I just want to say that yes, there are sexy scenes, and yes I guiltily read them all whispering ew ew ew gross. Moral of the story here. Its graphic. Even more so than ACOTAR, and Empire of Storms, though all Maas' characters seem to have sensitive chests (that's all I'll say on that, hopefully those reading this are mature enough to handle some adult sitchs).
Okay, on to probably a more serious thing than my mindless fan girl babble...
*The address to the idea of stolkholm syndrome (you fall in love with your captor) that has been a factor deterring many from like the classic Beauty and the Beast fairy tail
AND
*the underlying message that preaches against sexual abuse and leaving abusive relationships.
So I saw mentioning of the later in something else I had read on the books before I had even purchased them and kinda just brushed them off because as I said before at the time I wasn't going to read the rest of em (I bought them anyway because I know how I am ;P). But now that I have read the following book, I just want to take a moment and say that I appreciated Feyre's courage and Rhys's too. I think that aside from the sexual content in three major scenes, this really preaches a positive message. At first, when I saw what Rhysand was doing and Feyre left the manor, I was really mad. I cheated, as in flipped to the back to see if she ended up with Rhysand. She did, obviously. And I was mad. Because my first thought was that she as just going to do what pretty much all YA heroines do and leave the other guy hanging while they prance around with someone else. BUT as I continued reading, even though I was secretly stewing over it, that didn't happen. Here's a twist. FEYRE BREAKS UP WITH TAMLIN (and here's the catch) BECAUSE HE WAS AN ACTUAL JERK AND THERE WERE NO STRINGS ATTACHED. WHAT!?!?! HEROINES CAN DO THAT??? *insert sarcastic tone* Thank God for an author that has finally found it in herself to god-forbid, have her heroine have more than one honest relationship. Folks you saw it in Throne of Glass and now you're seeing it again. *insert applause here*
Feyre's relationship with Tamlin was abuse in the truest sense. And it was sad and refreshing because here comes Rhysand who literally defies all reputation in the book and in the reader's heart and saves her. I seriously didn't see any of that coming. Very rarely does a book surprise me that way. It was like ACOMAF just reversed whatever ACOTAR set up. I just...ugh...the feels man the feels. I just can't get over it all. It has been a long while since I've found a book that has me crying just because of the tenderness that's in a characters heart. Call me a whimp, but yes I cried all through his story of finding Feyre and his trials and things he went through.
Final Impression: 5/5, ten stars, 11 on a scale of ten, just freaking fantastic. Slow to start but goes from 0 to 100 real quick, with no shortage of Maas's tell tale waiting till the end to create an enormous cliff hanger and have the reader hooked to no end. Sexual encounters are present so use discretion, very, very graphic (if you've seen the memes about the soup you'll understand). This is the stuff fandoms are made of ;P.
Feel free to discuss. Keep up with magic by following the blog. I'll be around.
